5 Lessons From A College Freshman

As the 2023-2024 academic year draws to a close, I'm compelled to share the wisdom and insights I've gained during my first year at the University of Michigan. Despite being just 18 years old, I've undergone significant changes and growth over these two semesters. Without further ado, here are my five key lessons from freshman year:

1. Open Mind, Open Heart

The idea of saying “yes” to everything in college initially terrified me. As someone who cherishes alone time, the thought of constantly depleting my social battery was daunting. However, I've come to realize that saying “yes” to everything isn't essential for a perfect college experience. What truly matters is being open-minded and authentic. Whether you're outgoing or introverted, don't close yourself off to new opportunities. Step out of your comfort zone and embrace the diverse communities around you. Don't change for others, but remain open to growth and new experiences. This mindset allows for personal growth and fulfillment.

2. Long-Distance Friendships

Leaving behind a close-knit group of high school friends was challenging, but distance hasn't weakened our bonds. In fact, it has strengthened them. Despite attending colleges across the country, we stay connected through daily updates and occasional visits. Recognizing the value of true friendships, I urge incoming freshmen to cherish those who consistently make time for them. These enduring connections are invaluable.

3. Work Hard, Play Hard

Balancing academics and social life is essential for a fulfilling college experience. While UofM offers abundant social opportunities, managing academic demands is crucial. As an Honors biochemistry student juggling two campus jobs, I prioritize a “work hard, play hard” mentality. It's vital to give yourself breaks and engage in social activities to prevent burnout. By maintaining this balance, I've found greater focus and academic success.

4. Prioritize Self-Care

Amidst academic and social pressures, it's easy to neglect self-care. However, taking moments to breathe, connect with loved ones, and rest is essential for well-being. Don't sacrifice your health for academic or social pursuits. Remember to prioritize self-care amidst the college whirlwind.

5. Put It Into Perspective - 4 Hours, 4 Days, 4 Months, 4 Years

Overthinking is common in a new environment, especially when forming new connections. To combat this, implement the “4 Hours, 4 Days, 4 Months, 4 Years” tactic. When faced with worries or anxieties, ask yourself: “Will this matter in 4 hours? 4 days? 4 months? 4 years?” Often, the issue at hand is fleeting and insignificant in the grand scheme. By gaining perspective, you can alleviate unnecessary stress and live more freely.

While I may look back on these lessons and laugh at my naivety as a senior, they've shaped me into a happier, more independent individual. I'm grateful for my freshman year experience at UofM—it was truly a transformative journey.
