The Human Network

Feeling overwhelmed and disconnected is a universal experience, whether it stems from the pressures of school, work, social anxieties, or simply navigating through life. A lot of people cope in different ways, but for me, journaling became a way to process my thoughts and emotions; it became a daily outlet and a breath of fresh air for me- a way to release all the pent-up emotions that I'd been holding inside. I was soon inspired to create something that would allow others to feel the same sense of release and self-expression. And so, The Human Network was born.

The Human Network is a platform where people can share their personal stories anonymously through journaling in communal notebooks placed around campus.  By jotting down their experiences, individuals can let go of their anxious thoughts and connect with others. The goal is to reduce the mental health stigma on college campuses and create a sense of community and connection.

The response to The Human Network has been incredible. It's amazing to see how sharing personal stories can create such a strong bond between people we might even consider strangers. I am grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those struggling with mental health issues.

With funding from a recent grant award, The Human Network plans to expand its brand and outreach with a website and custom notebooks (coming soon!). In the mean time, here are some excerpts from fellow Michigan students who have written in the already existing Human Network journals:

“Hello strangers! This is a cool idea. Im an international student from Europe and since moving here I have learnt a few things about the US… Food Wise.

  •  Everything is sweeter than in Europe.

  • You can't find good cheese anywhere.

  • Understanding American Football is important.

  • Almost no one knows what Eurovision is. Americans are very polite…”

“Through it all, remember to live your life. We won’t get these moments back. Do things you love and little things that make you happy (within financial reason). Don’t wait for life to start after college or when you get a job etc. Every day is a chance to do something you love…”

“Hey guys. I hope everyone reading this has an amazing day. Reading through these entries, it seems like we’re all going through it a little bit but that's okay... I know things can be so tough and it's so hard to keep pushing at times, but it's so important to live in the good moments and be grateful for them even when the bad stuff seems huge.”

“I wish for the success of each and every student that I see walking on campus. You are all the future, and you are going to change EVERYTHING. I can feel it.”

If you happen to come across one of the notebooks around campus, take this anonymous opportunity to be vulnerable and let go of whatever is on your mind. You may find that sharing your story is not only cathartic but also rejuvenating, and you may just inspire someone else to do the same.
