Facing your Fear of the Gym
October 11, 2022
Whether they admit it or not, every ‘gym girl’ once didn’t have the Apple headphones, Gymshark set, and a clear plan going into their workout. We all start somewhere, so here are some tips to make the first few times slightly less intimidating:
Go with a friend. Everything is a little less scary when you have someone you’re comfortable with by your side. If you have any friends that go to the gym regularly, ask to tag along and follow their workout, or, get a friend who’s never been to the gym and tackle it out together!
Find a workout on social media. Instagram and TikTok pages are flooded with workout inspiration. Search ‘Full Body Strength Workout’ or ‘Leg Day’ and you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.
Be Consistent. And be patient. It might feel uncomfortable and unfamiliar at first, but stick with it and you might get hooked.
Start with the Basics. Make sure you focus on form before anything else to prevent injury. There are plenty of videos online that show you how to properly perform any exercise. Start with light weights (or body weight!), and increase as you get more comfortable with the movement.
Go easy on yourself! Don’t put any pressure on the initial workouts. You’re there to get a feel for the gym, a sense of what movement feels good for your body, and to learn how to properly perform the exercises.
If you’ve been wanting to start going to the gym, but don’t know where to begin, here’s a quick full body beginner workout: (Note: 3x10 = three sets of ten reps of an exercise)
3x10 Tricep Dips
3x10 Assisted Pull Ups

3x1min Plank
3x20 Bicycle Crunches
