Ever since I was a little girl, my jewelry designer mom influenced my fashion sense from the time I can remember getting dressed on my own. She taught me the importance of wearing clothes that inspire confidence and happiness, and to not be afraid to stand out. Looking back through my fashion history, colorful scarves, fun hats and jackets, and even a funky dress made from neckties began my journey and love for dressing up and wearing clothes that started conversations and stirred connection.
As I matured throughout middle and high school, I found that my style was different from the other girls in my grade. Everyone wanted to have the same clothing, same brands, same colors so they “fit in.” I hated the idea of that because I knew that it was not a reflection of who I was - flamboyant, opinionated, and independent. Instead, I gravitated towards brighter colors that stood out, rhinestones that “sparkled” and shoes in brands and colors that no one else was wearing. Soon enough, my closet was filled with statement dresses and shoes that reflected the happiness I felt inside. I joked that if you ever caught me in any article of clothing that wasn’t colorful, something must have been wrong!
I am a firm believer that what you wear is a direct reflection of your mood and personality. Fashion is defined differently for everyone and is one of the most noticeable forms of self-expression that not only reflects one’s persona, but can connect us with other people. While style is subjective, embracing the perks of not conforming to the latest trends we see all over social media - but rather embracing our authentic style - only boosts our confidence and brings us closer to one another.
There is no “right” to how you dress, no matter what Instagram influencers may tell us. Whether you label yourself as preppy, boho, minimalist, or you don’t even label your style at all, there is no correct way to express yourself. It’s truly up to the eye of the beholder, and at a school like Michigan, being able to convey yourself through fashion is one of the most exciting things about coming to a large, diverse school.
Although my love for a sequined skirt and shiny shoes may not be everyone’s cup of tea, this personal and fun style mirrors my bubbly and outgoing personality. I have learned to embrace how I dress (no matter how flashy or “obnoxious” it may be) as I know that I have found comfort and confidence in how I view and present myself to others.
While it may seem difficult at times to wear what truly makes you happy, I have found that this small act can actually significantly brighten your day. Not only is style what you wear, but it's your lens in taking on the challenges that may arise. So, to that crazy pair of pants with the different patches sewn across it, or the evening gown currently sitting in your shopping cart, patiently waiting as you debate to get it... buy it. Never dull that sunshine that is waiting to radiate through.
