Female joy is often ridiculed. Whether it’s loving iced coffee, a popular exercise class, or a new style of jewelry, the things that women enjoy are often described as “basic”. Basic has been twisted and turned from meaning “essential,” “primary,” or “fundamental” to now insinuating insult and negativity. My eyes were recently opened to this phenomenon by Tinx, a TikTok and social media sensation.
Upon further thought, I realized that stereotypically male activities, such as playing video games, watching Sunday football, or going fishing, do not have this same negative connotation. So why are stereotypical female activities and desires inescapably labeled as basic, the more subtle, but equally rude way of saying “bad”? And, why do men participate in equally popular activities and come out unscathed? Surely, in an equal world, watching Sunday Night football and eating Buffalo Wild Wings takeout would also qualify as basic.
The answer lies in the timeless and unsettling reality that our society rests on a system where women are relentlessly ridiculed. Women's beauty and etiquette norms come from a history of men dictating ideals and women being left with no choice but to comply. The patriarchal system has forced women to follow the direction of men if they want to survive. While times have certainly evolved, the patriarchal precedent has created a culture where women's actions and behaviors are constantly critiqued, whether in fashion, business, or personal life choices. Without restraint, people are emboldened to give their two cents on everything women do and enjoy. So many things inexplicably end up on the basic list: lip balm, hair scrunchies, nail polish color. Women are held to particular standards of beauty and personal care but are then criticized for the means taken to achieve them.
Ultimately, we love what we love for a reason. Basic things are basic because they appeal to the masses and do not fit a particular demographic or consumer base. They are fun, taste good, make us feel confident, and bring us joy. These elements of life should be celebrated, not frowned upon. In a world of endless difficulties, feeling guilty about liking what other people like should not be on the to-do list.
So yes, I love my ugg slippers - they are cozy and keep my feet warm, and I will never shy away from an iced latte. Something basic is loved far and wide, and for good reason. It is time that our preferences do not attract bad press simply for being our preferences—gone with the days of basic meaning “lame” or “overdone”. We should all celebrate the popular and inclusive activities that bring us together, and just enjoy them as they are.
