The universal concept of loneliness is one that seems impossible to forgo. Human experiences impact everyone uniquely, yielding different emotions and reactions; our different experiences make life, and more importantly the “unknowns” in life, daunting to imagine and approach. What if, one day, the stress about fearing the unknown goes away? Would it make you feel better or worse if I told you that your only real purpose in life is to exist, to internalize every emotion and experience the time allotted for you? The Egg Theory, initially coined by Andy Weir, attempts to give insight into the purpose of human life.
Based on Andy Weir’s version of the Egg Theory, every human to ever exist is simply a reincarnation of you. This world, as we know it, is made for you and only you. Your soul contains every memory, lesson, and experience from a past life, even if you cannot recall them. The human mind, in all of its glory, is too small to truly encompass the entirety of who you are. This idea is hard to comprehend, I know, but hopefully after this article you will begin to internalize what exactly this theory suggests: every time you talk to another person, you are actually speaking to another version of you. Every time you help someone out, you are helping another version of you. Everytime you exploit or victimize someone else, you are only bringing yourself pain.
There are infinitely many versions of you, and there will continue to be infinite versions of you until you have accumulated every experience, emotion, trauma, and success that can be had. Only then, will you be able to become the fullest, most immaculate version of yourself. You have been a roman emperor, as well as every one of their subjects. You have been cast away from society, and also have been the one ostracizing others. You have simultaneously won and lost the war. You are everyone there ever was, and everyone there will continue to be.
While all of that makes for an interesting read, you may be wondering “what’s the point?”. The point is that the purpose of human souls is to learn and to absorb, to soak up the knowledge and wisdom achieved after each life. So that eventually, once you have embodied every human experience, you can transcend physical life and guide the next soul through each of their reincarnations.
Initially, I was not fully swayed to believe the Egg Theory. There was one thing in particular that inhibited me from supporting this theory, and it was that the Egg theory feels too self-centric. I mean, it’s inherently selfish to believe that this universe was built for me and only me, that every person I have ever interacted with is just another version of me. However, after second thought, I believe that it makes the theory irrevocably universal. The Egg Theory creates a concrete tie between every human life; it emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity. If every person to ever exist treated others as though they were looking in a mirror, the world would be a very different place. I predict that if every person understood that they have walked and will walk in everyone else’s shoes, there will be a dramatic increase in appreciation, empathy, and understanding for all members of our different communities.
