Hi readers!
Welcome to Hopelessly Yellow. If you have been here before, welcome back! If not, we are so happy that you found us.
Hopelessly Yellow is a digital brand that fosters mental wellness and gratitude for the little things in life (what we call the “yellow things”) through writing (hi), social media, graphic design, lifestyle, music, DEI, and even our new podcast Golden Hour (hosted by two amazing writers hi Caroline and Zoe).
Allow us to introduce ourselves:
Hi, I’m Maddie Canter. I am a Sophomore at Michigan studying Business and Creative Writing and I have been a part of Hopelessly Yellow since the beginning of my freshman year. I never truly understood how much joy I could imbue simply from being creative and following my passion for writing, that is, until I found Hopelessly Yellow and its stellar team. I have loved every minute of my time at Hopelessly Yellow, especially this semester in my position as co-editor-in-chief with the talented and lovely Maureen. I love Hopelessly Yellow because I truly believe that it is rare to exist in a community that provides writers and creatives alike the opportunity to be wholly themselves and share their struggles, successes, shortcomings, and unique perspectives. There is something to be said for just letting the creative juices flow; at Hopelessly Yellow, they flow like an ever-roaring river.
And I’m Maureen Diehl. I discovered Hopelessly Yellow my junior year and within the organization have had the fun of fostering new friendships and my pre-existing love of writing. As I prepare to graduate this month with my bachelors degree in History and English, I want to express my utmost gratitude for the time I had this semester serving as your co-editor-in-chief alongside someone as outgoing and creative as Maddie.
As we wish Maureen the best as she embarks on the exciting post-graduate journey, we wanted to take a second to express our gratitude for this community and to give Maureen the writing spotlight that she unequivocally deserves. Take it away, Maureen!
Okay, here goes nothing; I’ve frequently run into others with, and once had myself, the preconceived notion that writing is an individual pursuit. That poetry and essays, stories and narratives, are methods of self-processing seldom capable of being produced by a community. I struggled with this notion until my junior year when I stumbled across the HY Instagram and, before I knew it, became a member of this community. To develop ideas with like-minded individuals is an absolute honor and joy. As a writer and editor, I’ve been encouraged to build on ideas of my own and others in an environment that gives every story its own chance to be told.
As I fondly look back on my time contributing at the executive level, I find myself particularly sentimental for my early days as a content writer. For creatives, having a platform to share your personal endeavors is such a privilege and is not one to be squandered. But as thrilling as it’s been to be a creator, I’m equally as excited to remain a consumer of all that the writing, music, graphic design, DEI, lifestyle, web, and social media teams work so passionately to produce. When the new semester unfolds in the Fall, I am confident that, as I look on from afar, I will continue to have so much pride for the shared commitment to promoting a “yellow” lifestyle that every member has.
It is our hope that Hopelessly Yellow has been and continues to be a space for you to find community, understanding, entertaining anecdotes, and information through the work of our entire team. Additionally, it is our absolute pleasure to announce that Hannah Tiller will be joining Maddie in that pursuit as co-editor-in-chief this Fall.
That is right–you cannot get rid of me that easily! I am so excited to continue to build on the solid foundation that Maureen has helped me build, and I know Hannah, a stand-out writer and friend, will be the perfect person to have with me by my side. I am so thankful for my time in working with Maureen and I know she will have the utmost success in the “real world.” But, here on campus (and online), Hannah and I will strive to uphold the values and content that make Hopelessly Yellow the exciting and eclectic amalgamation of media that it is and will continue to be.
With that being said, thank you Maureen for working with my sporadic texting tendencies and creative ramblings. You rock.
And thank you, Maddie, for being my rock this semester. You never failed to have new, effective ideas and I’m excited to see you continue to crush all of your creative, professional, and personal pursuits.
To the readers and to Hopelessly Yellow’s community, thank you for being there and for your unwavering support. We literally would not be the same without each and every one of you.
Goodbyes are hard, but new beginnings are exciting.
Stay Yellow,
Maddie & Maureen
